Chromecast with GoogleTV update includes a bunch of new features and fixes

The now six-month old Chromecast with Google TV is currently receiving an update which is fixing a heap of issues, as well as introducing new features.

The April security update – QTS1.210311.005 –  also includes an update for the voice remote (24.5 > 24.7) and clocks in at 166MB in size.

It’s not terribly large, but includes new features like a new “Advanced Video Controls” menus setting found under Display & sound which offers users now the option to specify SDR, HDR or Dolby Vision, as well as granular controls for colour formats, and easier access to resolution and refresh rates. You can also now refine HDMI-CEC to only turn your TV on/off.

The fixes, while not as exciting as new features are going to be welcome for anyone who had issues with 5GHz Wifi and mesh networks, as well as a stuttering bug when using Bluetooth Audio in some apps.

The complete list of updates:

  • Advanced Video Controls setting for granular HDR formats, resolution/refresh rate, and color formats
  • HDMI hotplug improvements helping your Chromecast detect the best TV Settings available
  • Wi-Fi Improvements for 5GHz and Mesh networks
Bluetooth Audio stuttering improvements in some Apps
  • HDMI-CEC can now be configured to turn on/off only the TV in settings
  • Security update: Android security patch level to April 2021

You should be prompted when the update is available for your Chromecast, but if you want to try checking manually you can select your profile pic and then go to Settings > System > About > System update.
