Car sales boom as the financial year ends – Ford Ranger tops the charts

It’s always a boom time for new car sales, the end of financial year, June – and 2021 has seen the car industry return to some glory after the nightmare of 2020 and Covid-19.

110,664 vehicles were sold, taking the 2021 total to 567,469 up 125,053 on last year.

Head of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries Tony Weber saw the numbers as following trend “Expectations for a strong result in June had remained high given the traditional end of financial year demand from business and private buyers driven by Government incentives such as the extension of the depreciation allowance announced in the Federal budget coupled with intensive marketing activity from vehicle brands,” he said.

“In spite of some States being forced into COVID-19 lockdowns towards the end of June, the acquisition of a new vehicle remains a popular option for buyers across all market segments.”

Sales within the Government were up 10.4 per cent on this time last year, and there’s signs of a recovery in the tourism industry to with Rental sales up 192 per cent!

Toyota topped the charts overall with 118,953 sales, Mazda second with 60,446 with a big gap back to Hyunda and Kia with 38,634 and 37,894 respectively.

It was very tight between Kia, Ford and Mitsubishi with just over 400 cars in total between them all.

Nissan took 7th, Volkswagen 8th, Subaru 9th while MG rounds out the top 10 with 19,544 sales.

Individually, the Ford Ranger beat out the Toyota Hilux with over 600 extra sales at 6053 for the month.

Izuzu’s D-Max ute continues to challenge hard as the next best ute and the number three vehicle overall.

Mazda’s CX-5 is the 4th best seller, ahead of the Kia Cerato, Toyota Prado, RAV4, with the Hyundai i30 in 8th, Mitsubishi Triton in 9th and Toyota Corolla rounding out the top 10.

Remarkable, given the supply shortage in the market due to semi-conductor supply issues.
