The upcoming Google Pixel 6 phones are rumoured to be supported with 5 years of software updates

The Google Pixel 6 is rumoured to be releasing in two variants later this year and overnight not only have we seen rumoured specs of these be posted online but also the support they will receive. Android phones have long been criticised for their lack of software support compared to those from Apple and it appears that Google are looking to lead the way, hopefully for other manufacturers to follow.

A leaker who has a good track record with his accuracy and someone who has shared the leaked Pixel 6 images earlier this year, Jon Prosser, has revealed the specs and support for the upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The specs revealed can be seen below.

Google Pixel 6:

  • Screen size: 6.4″
  • Display: AMOLED
  • Rear camera setup: 50MP (Wide) + 12MP (Ultra wide)
  • Front camera: 8MP
  • Battery: 4614mAh
  • Processor: Google
  • Ram: 8GB
  • Storage: 128GB / 256GB
  • OS: Android 12

Google Pixel 6 Pro

  • Screen size: 6.71″
  • Display: Plastic OLED
  • Rear camera setup: 50MP (Wide) + 48MP (Tele) + 12MP (Ultra wide)
  • Front camera: 12MP
  • Battery: 5000mAh
  • Processor: Google
  • Ram: 12GB
  • Storage: 128GB / 256GB / 512GB
  • OS: Android 12

If these specs are indeed accurate, Google will not include the same quality camera in their two flagships this year. Whether this will affect the features that the cameras have is unclear but given that one of the best features of the Google Pixel phones are their camera software it will be interesting to see how this is affected. You would expect the Pro version with the added 48MP telephoto camera to be more flexible and able to produce better imaging in general than the dual-camera Pixel 6.

For those that like big displays will be happy with either but the Pixel 6 Pro will sport a massive 6.71-inch plastic AMOLED display — that is as large as the display in the OPPO Find X3 Pro which is a behemoth but also a joy to consumer media on.

The big kicker for many was mentioned at the bottom of the leak which is that the new Google Pixel 6 smartphones will receive “at least” 5 years of software updates. Google has promised three years in the past and with Apple now offering more than that it is no surprise to see Google trying to compete — now if we could get other Android manufacturers to promise (and adhere to) at least two years….

The Google Pixel 6 smartphones are expected to release in October this year which is no surprise given that has been their approximate release date each and every year. Keep an eye out for more information as we get closer to that date.
