Samsung Galaxy Fold6 gets thinner, lighter and smarter for 2024

It’s tough to iterate in big ways in the smartphone space, let’s be honest the last to do that was Samsung with the Fold and then Flip formfactors. Now a competitive segment of the market all on it’s own the Foldable category too is tough, these things are strong, stylish and great quality – so what can you do to improve them? The old favourites, thinner, lighter and now the new mark of a great phone – AI Powered.

As Samsung’s Head of Mobile eXperience Eric Chou says, this is part of their family of smartphones “Since launching Galaxy AI on the Galaxy S24 series earlier this year, we’ve confirmed that Australians are eager for a new generation of AI-powered mobile phones that unlock new experiences. We’re thrilled to now be leading the next phase of mobile innovation, incorporating Galaxy AI into our latest range of foldables and taking it one step further by expanding the power of Galaxy AI to our wearables range. Samsung is redefining the potential of mobile by offering unparalleled Galaxy AI experiences on more devices.”

For 2024, the Samsung Galaxy Fold6 is 14 grams lighter, is 1.3mm thinner when folded and 0.5mm thinner when open.

But, it’s dimensions have changed – it’s not as tall, but a touch wider, adding some much needed width to the front screen, while maintaining that massive 7.6 inch screen inside.

Available this year in three colours, the “Silver shadow” (Grey), Pink (aiming at a new market segment?) and Navy these are the best looking members of the Fold family since their inception.

Under the hood is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor with a 41% improvement in NPU, and faster everything all round of course.

So, Galaxy AI – now in Foldables, and it’s all round been beefed up too, with many of these newer features seemingly rolling out to the S24 also.

Things like Note Assist to help you auto format your documents, or Browsing assistant – like your personal reader to help you summarise what’s on a page.

Transcript Assistant now works in Samsung Notes, and there’s a new conversation mode in Samsung’s Smart Translation, allowing you to have a flowing conversation with someone in another language. Use the folded form factor to show them what you’re saying in their language, while you see (and hear) what they are saying in their language. Works a treat!

Perhaps taking Microsoft’s lead with their latest AI powered Paint, you can now generatively edit images with Smart sketch.

Take a photo of some rolling hills and blue sky – sketch a plane. I did it, poor drawing, hit the button and boom, 10 seconds later three options for an actual AI generated plane in the sky! Pretty cool stuff.

There are three variants coming to Australia, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB, ranging in price from $2,749 to $3,299.

And, the kicker, Samsung is now guaranteeing seven years of OS Upgrades. That’s a win. A big win.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 6 goes on sale July 31.
