Uniden App Cam Solo X2K Bullet Review – Great Price, Easy Setup, Great vision!

At $199 the all-new Uniden App Cam Solo X2K Bullet kit might seem cheap. It is. But it’s frankly remarkable value hard to look past.

This is a 2K resolution camera, battery powered, wire-free and it comes – in the box – with a Solar Panel – all for $199!

It’s a whole new generation for Uniden with a new design and a more powerful spotlight built in.

I installed this in no time – the screws into the eve took longer than the camera setup in the app.

Speaking of which, this is an all-new app for Uniden also. It’s called MyUniden+ (and Android) and it’s a revamp from top to bottom for Uniden. All Uniden camera products will likely fall in here from now on. That might frustrate some users of existing cameras, but I think on the whole it’s a better app.

It’s complex – there are vastly detailed settings – some of which I’ve literally only discovered today having had the camera in for a week.

Camera’s can of course be viewed in real-time, I just jumped into a live feed from mine and I’m writing this while in the USA. There’s plenty of detail and options when in the live shot.

I found the vision to be a great quality. Colour reproduction is excellent in the foreground, I notice that in the distance perhaps in bright sunlight the camera can’t really adjust to the two varied levels of light, but the foreground is – let’s be honest, the most important.

There’s no obvious HDR in effect so that glaring sun will likely skew and spoil your view – best to place it in a manner that avoids that entirely.

The two antenna can get in the way of your installation – I placed my mount just a bit too high on the fascia so was unable to extend them vertically – be mindful of that during installation.

It’s a big unit – far larger than previous App Cam Solo units, or an Arlo Pro camera. I suspect that plays into the battery life, a three month life should be great, though with the Solar panel included in the box, you should have an endless battery if that Panel is placed correctly in good sun exposure.

My gripe with the Solar Panel is the way it’s hard to get a neat fit. You need to get some cable mounts or something to run it under your eve or gutter perhaps, but it’s always just going to dangle out the bottom of the camera. At this stage, with a camera as big as this, I think the Swann theory of a Solar Panel ON the camera is looking like a winner.

Two way talk is a breeze, I could chat to my son via the camera from the other side of the world, though the conversation is not full-duplex. I couldn’t hear him talk when I talked. But when I did push to talk, he certainly hear me. Not a deal breaker, these are normally used to scare or simply instruct someone you see on the camera.

My initial testing made me frustrated by all the notifications. All Day, every day.

So I turned off Motion Notifications.

Then I dug deep into the settings, and found the motion schedule! Hooray!! This is way too hidden in the settings, but a required one to set, because the most common problem people have with security cameras is they get too many notifications and end up switching them off at the device level or simply ignoring them.

Cloud Storage is as per Uniden’s mantra – Free for 7 Days. This is without question the biggest selling point of these cameras. But add to that the price and ease of use, it’s a compelling proposition.

You can though purchase additional cloud storage, and Uniden now also have an AI recognition feature you can pay a tiny monthly fee for.

For avoidance of Animal and car motion triggers, that seems very worth it.

This is very much the all you need in one box kinda camera solution. And I can’t help but think it’s a great first camera for almost anyone to have.

You’ll find the App Cam Solo X2K Bullet kit with Solar Panel at Uniden direct or JB HiFi
