Apple brings the M4 chip to the ever colourful iMac

It took two years for the colourful iMac from 2021 to get an update, but this time round Apple isn’t waiting around – a year on, almost to the day, from the iMac with M3 launch, iMac today gets an update with the M4 Apple Silicon.

Apple call it the “world’s best all-in-one desktop” and they are pretty right there, hard to find a challenger for simplicity and performance, but it’s now more powerful than ever.

M4 makes iMac 1.7 times faster for everyday use, while more demanding processing is up to 2.1 times faster.

And, in time for Apple Intelligence (Launching today in US English, December in Australia) the Neural Processing Unit (NPU – or as Apple calls it Neural Engine) makes the iMac with M4 fully Apple Intelligence ready.

“iMac is beloved by millions of users, from families at home to entrepreneurs hard at work. With the incredible features of Apple Intelligence and the powerful performance of Apple silicon, the new iMac changes the game once again,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. “With M4 and Apple Intelligence, gorgeous new colours that pop in any space, an advanced 12MP Center Stage camera, and a new nano-texture glass display option, it’s a whole new era for iMac.

Interestingly, Apple say the new iMac is “available in an array of beautiful new colours” but honestly, they look the same as last times with a Green, Yellow, Orange, Pink, Purple, Blue and traditional Grey on the range. Perhaps they renamed them. To my eyes (on photo only) they seem slightly more washed out in colour than the previous generation – but regardless – they are the same colours.

Starting at

,999 it’s a solid value proposition for the home shared computer, or your workspace PC.

That entry level model has an 8Core processor and is the only one not available in with the Nano Textured Glass option to reduce glare and reflections.

iMac now supports WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 – might have to wait another generation for WiFi 7.

Pre-orders start today, with iMac with M4 going on sale Next week – Friday November 8.
