Owning an Electric Car brings a host of new adventures, but some of them aren’t what you’d expect from the old days of Petrol. I mean, you never turned up to a Servo needing to supply your own pump cable from the bowser did you? That’s what happens at some public charging locations, which is where the BYO Cable becomes a necessity.
I’d recommend any EV owner have two cables in their car at all times. Firstly, a trickle charger (Granny charger) which plugs into any normal power point, secondly a Type 2 to Type 2 EV Charging cable.
The latter is what you’ll need if you pull up to a charger like this:
You can’t charge unless you have a cable. Which is why Aussie tech company Laser has started selling Type 2 to Type 2 cables.
Importantly, as per the advice from Fire Authorities and regulators, the Laser “ChargeCore” cable meets Australian EV Charging Standards.
These standards ensure the cable, adaptor and whole package are safe. And we’ve seen issues with this before. Fire services in Victoria only recently had to put out a warning about the use of aftermarket cables.
The wrong cable, and in saying that, we mean a cheap cable, can lead to disaster.
Laser’s ChargeCore is a nifty solution, it’s 2.5m length coils up so if the gap is less you’re not leaving cables all around the place while you charge. Plus, in my experience, it makes it very easy to packup – even moreso given it comes with a handy cable bag to keep in the boot.
It will support a 22kW charge, on 3-Phase at 32 Amps or less. It’s heavy duty construction means it will last, and it’s backed by a three year warranty.
At $299 it’s not the cheapest cable on the market, but ask yourself – on any cheaper cable – does it meet and has it passed the Australian standards testing? If not, are you willing to risk it.
Please don’t.
