iPhones and ‘Major Android Smartphones’ will get faster 25W Qi2 wireless charging

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), the body behind the Qi2 standard announced in 2023, has announced a new update to the spec expanding it to support 25W charging.

Based on Apple’s MagSafe tech, Qi2 brought magnetically aligned charging as well as an update from 7.5W wireless charging to 15W charging. The latest update, which takes us to Qi v2.2.1, brings support for 25W wireless charging.

According to the WPC, Apple is on-board for the new Qi2 spec, with ‘major Android smartphones’ also apparently set to ‘join the Qi2 ecosystem’ with this launch – indeed the WPC said that ‘Fourteen devices, receivers and transmitters, completed Qi2 25W certification testing in a limited launch last week.’

Fady Mishriki, chair of the WPC’s Board of Directors said

“The momentum building behind the next stage in the evolution of the Qi standard is incredible. Consumers will be delighted when they experience Qi2 25W as it delivers nearly 70% more power than the original Qi2. The number of devices in the Qi2 25W certification queue for launch is unprecedented, as is the quality and breadth of our members product designs.”

Apple already supports Qi2 wireless charging from the iPhone 12 onward, while only one Android phone has been released with Qi2 support, the HMD Skyline.

From the release it appears the flood gates are about to open, including from the likes of Google who are rumoured to be introducing it to the Pixel 10 series when they launch them next month
