The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced at CES that Qi2 is on the way based Apple’s MagSafe technology. The new standard will also incorporate a number of new technologies that have emerged since the implementation of the original standard 10 years ago.
The WPC is basing Qi2 on Apple’s MagSafe technology, with other WPC members contributing to develop Magnetic Power Profiles. Magnetic Power Profiles ensure devices, including phones and other devices align perfectly with the charger – allowing for faster and more energy efficient charging. It will also allow for new accessories which would not be able to charge using existing flat surface-to-flat surface devices.
The Qi2 standard – pronounced ‘chee two’ – will replace the previous Qi standard and enable faster charging for some devices, as well as paving the way for increases in wireless charging speeds that are safe and energy-efficient, without damaging the phone or battery.
The standard is expected to go live later this year, with Qi2 certified mobile phones and chargers expected to be available by the end of the year.
