Sennheiser has released a limited-edition MOMENTUM 4 Wireless to celebrate 80 years of excellence as a premium audio brand. Designed in collaboration with graffiti artist Bond Truluv, the new headphones are launching across Australia this week for $639.95 AUD.
The 80th Anniversary special edition of the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless headphones features a bold colourway that not just celebrates Sennheiser’s past but also colours “outside the lines” for its future.
The left earcup shows off Bond Truluv’s signature “throwie” tag. At the same time, the right side features “abstract linework inspired by audio waveforms – an artistic tribute to both chaos and control in sound.”
The yellow accents throughout the headphones and packaging are a throwback and a nod to the iconic Sennheiser HD 414 of the past.
“I wanted the headphones to feel like sound in motion—fluid, raw, and exciting,” said Truluv. “Pretty much all of my signature styles lead to a certain type of music or even a special song.”
Trevor had a look at the Momentum 4 Wireless headphones a few years ago, and while he wasn’t a fan of the lack of button control, he was impressed with the sound quality.
I’ve been using the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless 80th Anniversary headphones for a couple of days now and thought I’d give my thoughts on them too.
The design is amazing. It’s different, and that makes them stand out from the many greys, blacks, and whites we see in so many headphones these days. The yellow and the grey give it a bit of sedateness with the grey, but the splash of yellow graffiti and accents offer some fun and uniqueness to the headphones.
The headband is not the most comfortable I have used but if you loosen the band a bit and rely more on the clamping force of the earcups to hold the headphones secure, then you will not have any issues at all with comfort in long listening sessions. The comfort of the MOMENT 4 Wireless is comparable to that of the Bose QC45, with better ear padding on the Sennheiser headphones, although the Sennheisers are a bit heavier.
One of my favourite parts of the design of the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless headphones is the accelerometer that detects if the headphones are on your head. Lift them up and they will turn on. Take them off your head, even placing them around your neck, and the music/audio will pause.
I am also a massive fan of the touch panel control. Trevor was not a fan, but I often have trouble finding the correct buttons when controlling headphones. A touch/gesture control earcup is so much easier to use and sensitive.
Sennheiser products tend to straddle the line between consumer audio and audiophile audio. The last few Sennheiser products I’ve tested were priced at the upper end of the consumer lines but sounded well and truly on the audiophile side of the fence.
Comparing the sound quality to that from the Bose QC45, the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless blows it out of the water. The bass is deeper, crisper, and the clarity of the mids and upper registry is far better.
The sound quality is not up to the standard of the Focal Bathys ($1400+ headphones) but it was not far off. Focal is a true audiophile brand – there is no straddling any affordable fence there – and the sound quality shows. Listening to my headphone-testing FLAC playlist, I could hear a difference in the sound quality of the two headphones, but streaming music from Spotify and YouTube Music, the difference between the two was still present but not as exaggerated. Needless to say, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 offer decent bang for your buck when you consider they are half the price of the Focal Bathys headphones.
The MOMENTUM 4 Wireless 80th Anniversary Edition is available now at an MSRP of $639.95 AUD / $639.95 NZD.
It can be purchased via Sennheiser’s official online store, leading national retailers including Amazon, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, PB Tech (NZ) and select independent audio specialists.
To mark this 80th anniversary celebration, Sennheiser are offering a free BTD 600 Bluetooth transmitter with purchase until 10 September.
