Google has unveiled plans to launch Smart Glasses powered by AI over the next year, with glasses slated for release in partnership with eye wear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.
The announcement came as part of The Android Show: XR Edition, Google’s YouTube show featuring Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem, Shahram Izadi, VP & GM, Android XR, and the Android team talking about Android XR, and new products coming out.
Google will bring two new pairs of AI assisted Smart Glasses to market in the next year, as well as a third pair of wired XR glasses.
The first AI assisted Smart Glasses will be an audio only model which will also include a camera, letting you ‘ chat naturally with Gemini, take photos and get help’.
The second pair will also include an ‘in-lens display’ which will show helpful information including turn-by-turn navigation or translation captions.
The glasses will both have design at the forefront, with a focus on keeping them lightweight so you can wear them all day, with Mr Samat saying
“We’re building glasses first and foremost with eyewear in mind. That’s why we’re partnering with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to design glasses that are truly great to wear. Yes, our AI glasses are wear first. That means they will be light, fashionable, and wearable all day and give you help when you want it.”
The wired XR Glasses – called Project Aura – will run Android XR, like Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset announced in October, though with a lightweight look and feel.
The glasses will include a ‘70-degree field of view and optical see-through technology’ allowing Google to layer information onto the physical environment through the glasses.
Google says you’ll be able to take advantage of a huge private canvas where you can place multiple windows for work or play without blocking your view like a floating recipe video while you cook or seeing step-by-step visual guides anchored to an appliance you are fixing.
Google says they’ll be talking about the launch time frames for Project Aura next year so stay tuned.
