New Apple AirTag has louder speaker and longer range

In the more than four years since Apple Introduced the AirTag and their “FindMy” network for item tracking the market for tracking your keys, luggage and other items has exploded. Today Apple introduces a second generation AirTag with the same design, but tweaks internally to make it just simply – better.

The stories of people locating luggage, let along expensive items lost or stolen have been endless, and will continue with this new generation AirTag.

It’s hard to improve much on the basic concept of the AirTag, so the design of the new AirTag is identical, in fact the only way to tell an OG AirTag apart from the New AirTag is the fine engraved writing on the silver back – on the new AirTag this is in capitals, unlike the original.

Priced at $49 each or four for $165, the AirTag has stayed relatively price steady over the time since launch.

But in 2026 the new AirTag is louder, making finding your things just a touch easier. Apple say it’s 50 percent louder than the previous generation, so in simple terms you could be twice as far from the device when you hear it.

This also means that when it chimes or beeps to alert someone who may have an AirTag travelling with them that will be easier to hear also. That safety aspect has been a focus for the industry, after concerns were raised about people using these devices to track individuals without their knowledge.

Today, AirTags and Google compatible trackers will push notifications on screen to any Apple or Android device within range for a consistent period.

As well as a new speaker, the updated Apple AirTag also features Apple’s new second gen Ultra Wideband chip – this is the same chip that’s found on the latest iPhone and Watch series and it will make locating the AirTag even easier with on-screen precision finding.

Finally, the Bluetooth chip is also upgraded, meaning a wider range for basic Bluetooth locating also.
