One in every six cars sold in April was an EV – still think it’s a fad folks? Nope. And the second biggest car brand in Australia last month? BYD. Yep, the shift is happening.
Of course, these figures are “fuelled” by the crisis in Petrol supply and while that has steadied the fact is everyday Aussies now know how volatile those bowser prices can be and are looking keenly at Electric Vehicles.
The numbers don’t lie.
| Rank | Brand | April Sales |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Toyota | 15,185 |
| 2 | BYD | 7,702 |
| 3 | Kia | 6,450 |
| 4 | Hyundai | 6,002 |
| 5 | Ford | 5,748 |
| 6 | Mazda | 5,636 |
| 7 | GWM | 4,717 |
| 8 | Chery | 4,322 |
| 9 | MG | 3,678 |
| 10 | Isuzu Ute | 3,447 |
The modern Aussie Ute (The Dual Cab) help lift the load in the Top Ten vehicles by a log way, with the Ranger, Hilux in big numbers, the Rav 4 in fact became the number 1 selling car in Australia last month.
| Rank | Model | April Sales |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Toyota RAV4 | 3,729 |
| 2 | Ford Ranger | 3,661 |
| 3 | Toyota HiLux | 2,835 |
| 4 | Chery Tiggo 4 Pro | 2,379 |
| 5 | Hyundai Kona | 2,158 |
| 6 | Toyota Prado | 1,870 |
| 7 | BYD Sealion 7 | 1,780 |
| 8 | GWM Haval Jolion | 1,754 |
| 9 | Ford Everest | 1,585 |
| 10 | Mitsubishi Outlander | 1,540 |
Notably, BYD’s Sealion jumped in there, as did the affordable Chery Tiggo 4 Pro!
When it comes to pure Electric Cars, the BYD Sealion must have been a great one for the brand, with stock sitting ready they shipped almost 2,000 of them while the Zeekr 7X keeps on keeping on as a fantastic performer with almost 1,000 sales
| Rank | Model | April Sales |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | BYD Sealion 7 | 1,780 |
| 2 | Zeekr 7X | 973 |
| 3 | Tesla Model Y | 822 |
| 4 | Kia EV5 | 794 |
| 5 | BYD Atto 3 | 664 |
| 6 | BYD Atto 2 | 660 |
| 7 | BYD Atto 1 | 533 |
| 8 | Toyota bZ4X | 483 |
| 9 | BYD Dolphin | 445 |
| 10 | Kia EV3 | 445 |
| 11 | Tesla Model 3 | 403 |
Year on year, there’s some big stories here.
Zeekr grew from 58 sales last April to 1,006 this year, while Geely had a 519% growth from 324 sales to 2006.
BYD is up 140% year on year too!
We’ll add to these figures or correct them as we analyse them – but no question, a big month for EVs.
My suspicion is that May will be a bit down for EVs as supply struggles kick in, but they will surge again in June and July.
