We’ve all bought something that wasn’t worth the money. After my recent experience with Life360’s GPS Pet Tracker, I can confidently say this isn’t one of those purchases.

Our family has used Life360 for years. It’s a reliable way to keep track of the kids and cuts down on unnecessary phone calls and messages. Most of us are already used to tracking people and belongings, with Apple AirTags being one of the most popular options.

The critical thing about this device is that you do not need to buy a SIM Card from a telco here in Australia, and then also have a plan either monthly or annually.

What Life360 has done is incorporate a global SIM card into the device, and it’s effectively a “roaming plan”. Because the location data is such a small amount of data, it’s not intensive on the network, and thus Life360 has been able to do a deal with a telco somewhere for these global roaming SIM plans.

All that means you simply don’t have additional costs, over and above the device itself, and your premium subscription. Which, is frankly remarkable.

Why is the Life360 Pet Tracker better than an AirTag?

AirTags are amazing. How they work is relying on every Apple device in the world to be the “search party” for your item. Every time the AirTag goes near an Apple device, it’s able to quietly and privately update it’s location for the owner.

Works great for baggage because there are people with iPhones as baggage handlers and all around airports. Same for parcels.

But for a pet which has jumped free and roaming the neighbourhood on a weekday, there’s a lot less people around and thus, less Apple devices.

Once paired, your pet appears alongside family members. You can set up designated “Places” (like Home, the local park, or a family member’s house). Having your phone announce that “Ralph has left home” gives instant awareness before he even reaches the end of the street.

Features and Real-World Performance

The physical unit weighs in at 34 grams. On a smaller dog or cat, it might feel a bit chunky, but on a medium to large breed like a Golden Retriever, Ralph barely notices its there.

When Ralph is home resting on the local Wi-Fi network, the device drops into low-power mode, easily lasting 12 to 14 days. However, if your pet is away from home or out on an extended trip using GPS and LTE connections, the battery drains significantly faster. Not a deal breaker, it just requires a bit of power management if you plan on taking your dog away for the weekend.

Subscription and Cost

To use Life360 Pet GPS Tracker, a Life360 Gold or Platinum membership plan is required to cover the cellular data connection.

If you are buying this purely as a standalone tracker for one pet without using any other Life360 features, that subscription is going to feel high compared with standard Bluetooth tags. However, if your family already pays for Life360 Gold or Platinum, the pet tracker simply integrates into your existing plan without the need for an additional SIM card.
