Apple ditches ‘4G’ marketing for the New iPad

It was only a matter of time, I suppose. Given the fact that the new iPad’s 4G version didn’t actually work on Australian 4G networks – which kind of upset the ACCC – the Cupertino company has changed its marketing from “Wi-Fi + 4G” to “Wi-Fi + Cellular”.

What’s really interesting about the decision is that Apple hasn’t just changed the term in the Australian and UK markets, where government regulators have started taking Apple to task for the term, but also in the US, where the Wi-Fi + 4G new iPad actually does work on a 4G network.

Although anybody actually spending money on an iPad should do enough research on their purchase to know that it was never going to work on Telstra’s 4G network here in Australia, it was still a silly decision from Cupertino to stick to a marketing term with such variation around the world and expect it to stick. Fortunately, this move should end any confusion about the new iPad, and will undoubtedly help avoid any future issues with not only Apple devices, but 4G products from all manufacturers.
