Here at EFTM we know how important Star Wars is to the fans, It’s featured in several guest “top 3 movies of all time” and we know the work that went into valuing the real cost of the Death Star. Perhaps though as far as nerdy fandom goes this homage to Star Wars by a networking guru might just take the cake.
For the uninitiated, every device connected to the internet has a unique number – an IP Address. That IP Address is the unique address which allows all those bits and bytes to circulate the internet and get to you or wherever they are intended.
To travel around the internet, every request for data (like typing a webpage address) goes through a huge number of stops in a split second to ensure it gets there efficiently and of course to ensure it actually makes it to the right place.
In true nerdy style you can actually view the route taken to get from your computer to any destination in the world – by simply typing “Traceroute” followed by the “IP Address” of the computer at the other end.
What you get is a long list of hops and stops along the way. First your computer, then your home router, then your ISP for a few stops, then out onto the big wide internet before making its way down to the final destination.
The stops along the way are normally quite boring. Here’s where it gets interesting. One of the Star Wars geeks at Beagle Networks has taken a little time out of their day to route a bit of traffic through certain devices or stops – and given each of those stops a very specific name.
Let’s take a look:

Those lines, from 19-41 you might recognise. They are the words that appear on-screen after the all important “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..” In what was the original – Episode IV – Star Wars.
Episode IV, A NEW HOPE It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. Pursued by the Empire’s sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy….
