Royal Randwick goes high-tech with WiFi for 50,000 people

Punters, racing fans, blokes on buck’s days and ladies on hen’s days rejoice – the newly upgraded Royal Randwick racecourse has the capacity to bring you and 49,999 of your friends high-capacity WiFi after the Australian Turf Club (ATC) installed one of the most sophisticated network of its kind for a sports venue in Australia.

Royal Randwick – Now with Free WiFi

Offering free WiFi access isn’t cheap – the potential for a lot of people to connect and chew up valuable internet bandwith is a real problem, so when you multiply that problem into a crowd of tens of thousands of people it’s not an easy one to solve.

Royal Randwick believe their installation of a system capable of servicing up to 50,000 mobile devices at the same time – including live video streaming, makes the racecourse one of the most technologically advanced in the world.

Royal Randwick – Now with Free WiFi

Twitter, Instagram and Facebook will be right at the fingertips of race-goers, as well as perhaps the odd betting site or live race event streaming.

In addition to WiFi there’s no holding back on the technology in other areas of the redevelopment – with an 11 meter tall and 40 meter long fully programmable superscreen on the infield – the largest LED screen in the Southern Hemisphere!

Inside the redeveloped main concourse are even more super-sized LED screens over the bar and betting areas.

Throughout the grandstand there are 690 televisions and table-mounted touch-screens steaming video via IP and it’s all controlled by a central Master Control Room – this is one heck of a high-tech racecourse.

No holding back from the ATC with this redevelopment it seems – we look forward to checking it out this Spring!
