Safety highlights: Full suite of airbags including drivers knee airbag. ‘All Wheel Control System’ (AWC)

Wow Factor: Boy racer appeal. AWC system makes a novice look like a pro, particularly on dirt. Deceptively quick with raucous, screaming engine note.

Most Impressive: Under the bonnet is essentially a tame version of the rocket-like Evolution engine. The quick shifting twin clutch transmission is a real hoot to use via steering wheel paddle shifters. Hard to match stability and traction on any surface.

Not so impressive: Mitsubishi’s in general feel like they are a generation behind competitors. Cabin borders on cheap and the chassis just doesn’t feel all that solid. Fuel economy can see less than 400km’s per tank even without constant thrashing.

Early verdict: Dam fun, hot looks and sophisticated drivetrain. But is that enough?
