There’s a lot of hatchbacks on the market these days, the old Ford Laser was ahead of it’s time way back when wasn’t it:) Having driven the Barina, Clio, Golf, Fiesta and many others it’s a crowded, but quality market.

We were a little torn on this one, having been suitably impressed by the Renault Clio – it’s got great looks, an excellent ride and some cool onboard features – for that, it grabs an EFTM Highly Recommended.

However, if you were looking for the only car one would ever need, well, it’s easy. Volkswagen Golf. A substantial step up from the hugely rewarding sixth generation model and a ride that is the epitome of plushness. Yes, that was the lavish praised we dished out after we got our hands on the latest Volkswagen Golf range. As far as hatchbacks goes the VW is still sitting atop the current pinnacle.

The VW Golf possesses a driver focussed cabin with perfect fit and finish, modern and sleek styling all combined with surprisingly ample space. The Golf still retains those iconic exterior design cues, with a flat roofline and thick C-pillar. Some may challenge its slow but sure evolution approach, but why radically meddle with a good thing?

The ride is still the most sure-footed, pot-hole absorbing set up EFTM has ever driven. Some Europeans really struggle in this area but the Golf lopes along with almost unbelievable finesse.

With an extensive range of excellent turbo petrol / diesel power-plants, multiple equipment and technology upgrades plus a more than reasonable price range spread, there’s always the right Volkswagen Golf for you. Easily an EFTM Best Winner.
