The a-Jays range of earbuds will not jump out at you in terms of brand recognition even though they deserve just exactly that, recognition. The Swedish brand has created the a-Jays Five which is the top of the pile when it comes to the a-Jays range. EFTM has been testing the competent iOS version on an iPhone 6.

The a-Jays Five are fairly plain to look at going by today’s glitzy kaleidoscope of colours and designs on offer, the choice is literally just black and white. A relatively slim controller with three oversized buttons makes tracking back and forwards via the usual two or three clicks format easy. The other two buttons control volume. The middle button also activates the microphone, handy for speaking with Siri for example.

The microphone itself sits atop of the controller and offers superbly clear speech quality with built-in echo cancellation and noise reduction. We won’t bore you, but a significant amount of tech has gone into producing such a fine performing microphone.

For a snug fit the a-Jays Five come with five different silicon sized tips. My ears are notorious for rejecting most earbuds so the fact that even I could tolerate them is a good thing. The tight fit also eliminates a decent amount of leakage, which left others (my wife) sheltered from the rather dubious music tastes I have. Seriously the theme from Ghostbusters is worth a run every now and then!

A flattened cable ensures tangles are kept to a minimum and a cable clip is included to help alleviate what is a slightly heavy cord.

The sound is adequately immersive at this price point. With a secure sealed fit, you’ll notice deep and strong levels of base. There’s also a universal purity to just about anything you’re likely to listen to on a smartphone. In terms of added value you also score a hard circular case for storage.

Windows and Android users are also accommodated for, with versions available to ensure the in-line remote works just as smartly as our iOS version. At $120.00 the a-Jays Five undercuts much more financially imposing examples, but without giving away too much ground. They offer durability, value and more importantly impressive sound. Think of them as the Volvo of the earbuds world – safe, sound and secure.
