Smooth shaving – Philips Shaver Series 9000 review

Making the leap to the electric shaver is a tough one for many, the control of the blade offers in many cases the best control over your shave, and in many cases a better shave. But its messy, and a huge risk for Norman Gunston toilet paper face. Philips are one of the biggest in the business, and we’ve been road-testing – or should we say face-testing the new 9000 series shaver.

We got our hands on one of five models in the 9000 series range (the S9111/26) which retails for $449.95.

Rather than the barrel style electric shaver, the Philips 9000 series has a movable head with three circular blades. Because the three heads of the device can flex around in eight directions you will find they actually follow the shape of your face. Philips reckon that will help cut 20% more hair in a single pass than their SensorTouch 3D shaver.

Underneath those silver circular heads, are something Philips call V-Track precision blades, which “work in harmony” with the flexible head to target each and every hair.

When you fire it up, the sound is soft and you don’t feel from that there will be a huge amount of power to get to work, but move it around your face and it really does cut with ease.

You can feel the heads moving around individually as well as the entire top of the shaver. It’s given me a great shave every day, and I haven’t been left wondering on the cut quality compared to many other options I’ve used. For the dollar, its spot on – but not batting above its average.

For Charging and cleaning, you’re getting an improved solution from Philips. Depending on the model you choose, you can get the full cleaning and charging dock, which – at the touch of a button will do a range of things to keep the shaver in it’s best condition.

On the SmartClean PLUS system your shaver is lubricated, dried and charged, and the PRO series has a digital interface to let you know what stage of the process it’s at.

Plus, it’s got what they call AquaTec technology so you can shave wet with foam or gel for total comfort.

Priced between $399 and $599 there’s a lot of choice in the range, depending on what you need. I might need to upgrade to the S9711/31 with BeardStyler to see what that’s doing for the regular growth I carry these days.

The top of the line units are at Shaver Shop, with others available at big retailers nationally.
