Are You a Binge Racer?

We’re all guilty of staring at our calendar and marking the date that our favourite Netflix show drops a whole new series. Whether it is Orange is the new Black, Stranger Things or even the Gilmore Girls, we race home flick the TV on and get started. Generally, it also cuts you off from the rest of the world, with everyone else now starting their binge we may be watching at different points and spoilers are going to fly. Personally, I’ve binged a series of House of Cards in one weekend, no problem at all. Now, we hear of Bing Racers, it is the process of smashing a series in less than 24 hours from launch… and Australians love it.

In data released today by Netflix, 8.4 million members have chosen to Binge Race during their tenure, and the only thing faster than their rate of watching is the rate this behaviour continues to grow. Between 2013 and 2016 the amount of launch day finishers increased more than 20 times over. There’s a Netflix member in Australia who has raced 13 times this year (12th globally). Clearly, Netflix won’t mention their name for privacy issues surely but their data shows a little more…

In Australia, the top 10 most binge raced shows (completed within 24 hours of launch)

  1. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
  2. Marvel’s The Defenders
  3. Santa Clarita Diet
  4. The Seven Deadly Sins
  5. The Ranch
  6. Fuller House
  7. Atypical
  8. White Gold
  9. Friends from College
  10. F is for Family

Now, it is a little disappointing to see that Orange is the new Black doesn’t make the top 10, it actually sits at 13th. Interestingly, when it comes to White Gold, Australia raced through it faster than any other country.

From a states and territory perspective, the top binge racers are also sorted (coincidently) from most boring to least…

  1. Australian Capital Territory
  2. Queensland
  3. Tasmania
  4. Other AU
  5. South Australia
  6. Victoria
  7. Western Australia
  8. New South Wales

We assume “Other AU” means Northern Territory…

So, who else is going to start training for their next Binge Race?
