Nikon Announces Latest Superzoom Camera: CoolPix P1000

The Nikon CoolPix P1000; the camera compensating for something. Jokes aside, Nikon’s latest release has the largest zoom length ever on a compact digital camera, being endowed with a 125x optical zoom lens that covers an incredible range of focal length beginning at the wide-angle 24mm* equivalent and extending to the super-telephoto 3000mm* equivalent.

English for the people who aren’t camera buffs; Nikon’s previous effort at a superzoom camera was the P900 which had a 83x optical zoom lens, and they felt they needed to go that one step bigger and crank it right up to 125x.

“With this new COOLPIX camera, Nikon is putting all of its optical expertise and technological knowledge in the hands of our users. Perfect for super-telephoto photography, be it for wildlife, or astrophotography, the new P1000 gives our users streamlined operability and high resolution quality that is guaranteed to impress.” says James Murray, Managing Director, Nikon Australia.

As the managing director explains, this camera is definitely for those looking to take epic shots of planets or wildlife and is designed to match with devoted bird watching and moon shooting settings on its mode dial. That’s what you’re getting out of this huge zoom functionality, that’s the big selling point.

BUT the incredible superzoom capability that this camera offers is by no means its only attribute with the P1000 also boasting a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor which allows for an ISO range of up to 6400 along with high-definition 4K UHD/30p movies. Along with this, the camera also possesses most of the usual bells and whistles that DSLR cameras come with these days, e.g. an LCD screen, common button arrangement etc.

The P1000 is set to go on sale around September at a price of USD $999, which although expensive, will sure beat your iPhone camera’s zoom capabilities if you’re looking to take some awesome shots of nature.
