Australian War Memorial to use VR for exhibits

The Australian War Memorial has launched a 360-degree digital video and virtual reality experience in Canberra. As part of its On Closer Inspection series those attending the memorial can experience a Bushmaster Protected Vehicle in far more detail than ever before.

Assistant Director, Branch Head Public Programs, Anne Bennie, said: “The On Closer Inspection series of interactive digital experiences allow the public to view our large technology objects inside and out, giving them unprecedented access to the iconic Bushmaster,”

“Pop-up icons allow the user to look at photos, watch videos, hear audio recordings, and uncover the stories behind the vehicle and the role it played in Afghanistan.

“The Bushmaster is loved and trusted by the troops who have served in it, and it will be on display in the years to come within the Memorial’s redeveloped gallery spaces.

“The Bushmaster is important to the story of Australia’s involvement in contemporary conflicts around the world and this interactive digital experience allows the Memorial to share that story on behalf of veterans.”

The On Closer inspection series can be used on just about any digital device. For example, there is React 360 VR technology, and one for YouTube 360. An additional VR app will be released in the coming weeks for those wishing to use a smartphone with or without a VR headset.

The On Closer Inspection series has been made possible via a partnership with Leidos Australia who specialise in technology advancements for the Australian Defence Force. This is just the being too as the Memorial rolls out three more 360-degree immersive experiences for The Avro Lancaster B1 ‘‘G for George” from the Second World War, HMAS Sydney (IV), deployed in the First Gulf War and a Lockheed Hudson bomber from the Second World War.
