VIDEO: Dyson Lifecycle Task Light review – the $799 desk light

I told you recently about Dyson’s new Lightcycle Task Light. Being a smart home fanatic, obviously I had to check one out. So for the last couple of weeks I’ve lived with this $799 creation.

This is about as far as you can get from an ordinary desk light. It understands the time of day for starters. Via an algorithm it’s able to work out colour temperature and the brightness of daylight, anywhere in the world. This was obtained via software validation backed by data from over a million satellite measurements.

Yes we are still talking about a light.

It delivers this data to an optical driver delivering the perfect light for your needs. Just sitting here at my desk reveals a much more natural light experience, it’s bound to be a less straining day with this by my side. It would want to be for the price.

The light can range from 100 – 1,000 lux brightness and has added glare protection plus minimal optical flicker. All the things you didn’t know you needed right?

In terms of colour it can range from 2,700 Kelvin to a very cool and white 6,500 Kelvin.

The light is said to last up to 60 years thanks to ‘Heat Pipe technology’. So, it may well outlast you. This technology reduces heat, literally venting it away. You can touch the lens of the light after hours and it’s barely hot at all.

Being a smart connected product, it’s linked to the Dyson Link app for added personalisation and the ability to create routines. There’s various modes such as Study, Relax, Precision, Boost, Wake-up, Sleep and Away. The Wake-up mode is great, gradually casting a warm glow as the sun rises. But I just don’t see this as a bedside lamp, not in my house anyway. It’s strictly confined to the office.

The Dyson Lightcycle Task Light is available from Dyson.com.au with a recommended retail price of $799. So obviously this is a serious purchase, but when you delve deep into the detail you’ll find a true masterpiece.
