Samsung announces fingerprint enabled T7 portable SSD at CES 2020

At CES Samsung has announced a bunch of stuff so far, and they’ve announced a new storage solution in their T-series with the Portable Solid State Drive (SSD) T7 Touch which includes a fingerprint sensor to secure your data on the go.

The Samsung T7 Touch offers improved data transfer speeds over the previous T5 models by using the USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard. Using this standard, the drive can offer read speed of 1,050MB/s and a write speed of 1,000MB/s.

Samsung has now included an indicator light – which they call ‘Motion LED’ –  to show drive activity, allowing you to see at a glance if your drive is in use.

Data is secured with 256-bit AES encryption on the fingerprint scanner, and for physical security of your data the enclosure can take a drop from up to 2m – but still only weighs 58 grams.

Dr. Mike Mang, vice president of Brand Product Biz Team, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics said of the new drive
Consumers who are constantly on the go between work, play and passion projects want to be able to securely carry their content with them. Now their data is secure thanks to the fingerprint recognition functionality incorporated into the product, which delivers industry-leading transfer speeds in a compact form factor.

You can connect to almost anything with comes with the drive supported by Windows, Mac and Android operating systems, and comes with a USB Type-C-to-C cable and a USB Type-C-to-A cable.

Available in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB sizes the drive will go on-sale in 30 countries later this month. Pricing wise, no Australian pricing has been announced but US pricing looks like this:

  • $129.99 USD for the 500GB
  • $229.99 USD for the 1TB
  • $399.99 USD for the 2TB

If that pricing is a bit rich you’ll be able to get a T7 without fingerprint scanner in Q2 later this year – pricing to be announced closer to launch.
