LG has wasted no time repeating it’s plans from the past couple of years beginning to filter out the odd 2021 product announcement just weeks out from the biggest Tech show of the year – CES 2021.
CES will not be held in Las Vegas in 2021, with COVID still creating havoc in the world, the event will be virtual, but we’ll still have you covered here at EFTM.
LG’s first big TV news is a big one – combining well known Quantum Dot technology with LG’s own NanoCell technology along with an all new backlighting method known as Mini LED.
These TVs will be called QNED Mini LED TVs, with the likelyhood therefore that there will be a standard array backlit version of the QNED – our assumption based purely on the naming being used.
Those three technology’s should present an impressive brightness and contrast to the viewer, perhaps not enough to rival OLED, but as LG say that’s the “pinnacle” of their offering.
The 2021 lineup of TV’s includes 10 new 4K and 8K models in screen sizes up to 86 inches.
Mini LED is a new form of backlighting, reducing further than ever the area of the screen lit by each “light” in this case up to 30,000 mini LEDs, which should allow a more specific light behind only lit areas, and less blooming on the edges of the black.
LG say this will produce a contrast ratio of 1,000,000 to 1, when compared to the over 2,000 dimming zones on a traditional, but still advanced LED TV.
“Our new QNED Mini LED series is a premium home entertainment option that expands and improves the LCD TV space and gives consumers another terrific viewing choice,” said Nam Ho-jun, senior vice president of R&D at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “These TVs deliver an experience that set them apart from other LCD TVs and speak to our commitment to innovation and pushing the standard forward.”
No doubt LG will have more to say about their specific models and 2021 range when CES hits in just a couple of weeks from now.
