In the cycling and fitness world Peloton is big, big name. These are not just exercise bikes – a Peloton is a bike with a computer screen offering live or on-demand classes right in your home. Their retail presence allows people to experience the system and they’re coming to Sydney – we think.

The company has a large number of retail stores around the world, but is yet to open here in Australia.

A development application lodged with the City of Sydney shows plans to refurbish what was the Tesla Store in Martin Place and turn it into a new retail space.

While Peloton is not specifically mentioned, I’d like to wonder who else might be opening a retail store with just a couple of static exercise bikes and treadmills out the front, and some specific testing rooms in the back of house?

It’s Peloton right?

A spokesperson for Peloton wasn’t giving anything away, telling EFTM “Peloton is committed to growth and innovation, in order to make our connected fitness platform accessible to as many people as possible. However, at this time, we have no market expansion news to announce.”

The City of Sydney development application states the space will be used as “A retail premises selling exercise equipment, including bikes, treadmills and fitness apparel

Adding “Fit-out works including construction of three equipment trial rooms, change rooms, showers and lockers for customers who participate in a trial, in addition to a showroom and consultation area;

But it goes further than Martin Place. EFTM also understands Peloton is opening in Bondi Junction Westfield in the location formally occupied by G-Star Raw.

As some of the most expensive exercise equipment on the planet, it makes sense that your first two locations in Australia would be in the affluent areas of the City and Bondi.
