Shazam hits 50 billion tags and over 1 billion per month

Shazam started off as a text message service in 2002 and chugged along slowly until they hitched their wagon to an invention called the iPhone in 2008. Since then it has slowly increased in usage but now with its integration into the Apple ecosystem is hitting new heights.

Today Shazam has announced their two new milestones, 50 billion tags since inception and now over one billion tags per month. Shazam did not hit one billion tags in total until 2012 so for them to be now hitting one billion per month is a massive milestone for them.

In the process of matching over 51 million songs Shazam has hit the 50 billion total tags with the most matched tag of all time from our very own Tones and I — Dance Monkey.

There are so many ways to use Shazam but one thing they prioritise is users’ privacy with the digital fingerprint of the audio created on-device and matched within seconds — the audio is not sent to Apple in any way, ensuring security and privacy is maintained.

“Shazam is synonymous with magic,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats, “both for the fans getting a song recognition almost instantly, and for the artists being discovered. With 1 billion recognitions a month, Shazam is one of the most popular music apps in the world. Today’s milestones show not only people’s love for Shazam, but also the ever-growing appetite for music discovery around the world.”

Shazam is looking to become even more integrated into the Apple ecosystem later this year when its new ShazamKit announced at this year’s WWDC is released. This allows developers to integrate Shazam’s technology directly into their apps.

Shazam obviously has a large amount of usage in everyday life and expect it to not only continue but increase with its new developments. If you want to know the name of a catchy tune and then listen to it in your favourite music subscription app Shazam is perfect for you.
