Sony has announced they’re starting to rollout a new firmware update to all PS5 owners which will allow access to the M.2 SSD expansion slot, as well as a few other goodies like 3D audio and some changes to the home screen.

Announced last month as a beta, the Sony firmware gives users access to the M.2 SSD slot inside the console which has been dormant since the console launched last year.

A Gen 4 PCIe M2 drive with a heatsink is required for the update, but there’s a number of drives available including the Western Digital SN850, Seagate Firecuda 530 and Gigabyte AORUS Gen 4 7000s. Installation is fairly easy, though will involve opening your PS5, however Sony has done a helpful installation video.

Also included in the update is the 3D audio support which uses the built-in TV speakers which Sony says ‘ transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into three-dimensional sound’. An update for the Dual Sense controller will use the built-in mic to measure your rooms acoustics to tune the 3D audio experience.

Anyone who has purchased the Sony Pulse 3D headset can also tune their sound with a new equaliser built into the Sound Control menu.

There’s updates for the Sony PS5 system as well with Control Centre now able to be edited to move or hide options as you require.

You can also now easily see the difference between your PS4 and PS5 games on the home screen, and Game Base is getting an update which lets you quickly view and write messages to your friends and parties directly from Control Centre.

Anyone who’s been on a trophy hunt for their favourite titles will be pleased with a new Trophy Tracker which lets you quickly access up to five trophies per game through the Control Center.

If you enjoy the PS Remote Play feature which lets you stream games from your console to your phone or tablet using the mobile app for iOS and Android, you’ll now also have the option of using a mobile data connection when WiFi is not available.

The update should be on your console now, or will be shortly, so make sure you update and check it out.
