Google Pixel 6a set to replicate the Pixel 6 design but will it arrive in Australia and at what cost?

Google revealed a brand new design for their Pixel smartphone with the Pixel 6 phones this year and that new design language is set to continue if the latest leaked rumours are to be believed.

91Mobiles and @Onleaks have teamed up to reveal renders of the Pixel 6a that are supposedly official. If we weren’t telling you that they were the Pixel 6a (and you didn’t look very closely) you would and could swear that they were the Pixel 6.

According to these leaked renders the Pixel 6a will sport a camera strip just as the Pixel 6 does atop the glass rear of the device. Inside the camera strip will be a dual rear camera setup although it is unknown just what specs the cameras will have. Considering Google’s ability to turn average camera hardware into amazing photos the specs themselves will be unlikely to matter too much.

The front of the display shows a 6.2-inch flat OLED display with a punch hole for the front-facing selfie camera. The fingerprint sensor will be under the display just as it is on the Pixel 6 smartphones — hopefully it works more consistently than it does on the Pixel 6 which struggles at times (but an update is rolling out to some countries that fixes the issue but will not arrive in Australia until December).

The bottom of the device shows off a USB-C charging port as we expected but there is not an audio jack anywhere in sight making it the first time Google has dropped it from their A series device.

The Pixel 6a will be smaller than the Pixel 6, just 152mm tall and 71.8mm wide compared to 158mm and 74.8mm for the Pixel 6. For those who like a smaller phone this could well be the device for you. Of course, the kicker will be the price that Google places on it. The Pixel 6a will most either sport Google’s own Tensor chip or a mid-range Snapdragon chipset with the rest of the device expected to sport mid-range specs as Google tend to do when they have a price in mind and aim for that.

Here at EFTM we expect the pricing to be around the $600 mark, just as the Pixel 4a was priced. Google has been extremely aggressive with their Pixel 6 pricing, and we expect that to continue with the Pixel 6a. The Pixel 5a did not arrive in many countries at all so it remains to be seen if it will land Downunder but we expect the pandemic have less an effect on supply by next year so we assume it will. If it does it will likely not be arriving until late Q1 next year so expect more details to be revealed before then.
