At their annual hardware in the US overnight, Rick Osterloh and his team have unveiled the new Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. 

The new Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro take all the helpfulness and personal intelligence about Pixel and makes them better. This means improvements in AI and Machine Learning with the new Tensor G2 processor, as well as more camera improvements with great new features like Guided Frame, Picture Unblur and more. 

Hardware

Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are powered by the Tensor G2 processor, Google’s second generation of their CPU hardware. The new processor offers improvements on the 1st generation, with a dedicarted TPU, so Google can bring their state of the art AI and Intelligence to the phone. Using Tensor G2, Machine Learning runs up to 60% faster and up to 20% more efficiently on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. 

The new Tensor G2 is paired with the Titan M2 chip for security, which also powers the new Face Unlock on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro – it’s a software based system, so no 3D sensors like we saw on Pixel 4, but it’s just as secure thanks to the Titan M2 chip on-board, and if you want to you can use the in-display fingerprint scanner which also makes a return. 

Google has also doubled down on sustainability on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, offering a matte enclosure on the Pixel 7 made from 100% recycled aluminium, while the Pixel 7 Pro has a Polished enclosure which is also made from 100% recycled aluminium.

In terms of specs, the Pixel 7 offers a 6.3-inch FHD+ resolution display with up to 90Hz refresh and 1400nits peak brightness, while the Pixel 7 Pro includes a 6.7-inch QHD+ resolution LTPO display capable of 10-129Hz refresh and up to 1500Nits brightness. Both displays (and rear) are covered in Gorilla Glass Victus for protection – and both phones are IP68 certified for water/dust protection.

Pixel 7 will include options for 8GB RAM, while Pixel 7 Pro starts at 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM. The Pixel 7 will offer either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, while the Pixel 7 Pro will offer up 128GB/256GB or 512GB of on-board storage. 

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro both offer NFC for wireless payments, as well as Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and of course 5G – mmWave for both and sub-6GHz for Pixel 7 Pro. The Pixel 7 Pro also includes an Ultra-Wide Band chip for improved spatial orientation.

The Pixel 7 will use a 4355mAh battery, while the Pixel 7 Pro comes with a 5000mAh battery – with both phones capable of up to three days use using Google’s Extreme Battery Saver mode. Both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will support up to 30W wired charging using the additional charger – there’s no chargers in the box any more. You can also charge wirelessly with the Pixel 7 supporting 21W and Pixel 7 Pro supporting 23W wireless charging.

Camera

Of course the camera on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro is getting better, with new hardware and of course new software features.

Hardware wise the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro share the same 10.8MP selfie camera on the front, with 92.8° ultrawide field of view and 1.22 μm pixel width. On the rear, the phones share the same 50 MP Octa PD Quad Bayer wide camera with 1.2μm pixel width, and a 12MP ultrawide camera with 114° field of view on the Pixel 7 and 125.8° field of view on the Pixel 7 Pro. The Pixel 7 Pro additionally gets a 48 MP Quad Bayer PD telephoto camera which includes up to 5x optical zoom and a Super Res Zoom which uses ML to get super crisp photos. 

On the features front, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will both see the return of Magic Erase, Real Tone and Face Unblur, but new features are coming powered by the G2 processor including Photo Unblur, Macro Focus, Guided Frame and Super Res Zoom.

For Photo Unblur, Google says the shots from the Pixel 7 series will be crisper. On the device, Google will use both the main and ultra-wide sensors to stitch together a shot that’s unblurry – but it doesn’t stop there, with Google promising to unblur photos in your photo library that were taken on older hardware when you edit on the Pixel 7.

Guided Frame is for accessible users, using ML to guide them into taking the best selfie. 

Super Res Zoom is also making a return to Pixel this year. Google says they will use a 2x zoom or crop of an image and then use the traditional Bayer format to crop down the 50MP image to a 12.5MP shot and then de-noise the image using HDR bracketing. This will allow them to get crisp shots, even at super high zoom.

Google is also adding better video for Pixel 7, offering 10-bit HDR with more colours, as well as Active Stabilisation to make sure you get steady video when you’re filming while on the move.

Finally, there’s Macro Focus for the Pixel 7 Pro only, this mode will provide great shots taken from just 3cm away. 

Colours

Google has shown off the colours of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro previously, with both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro both available in Obsidian (Black) and Snow (White). The Pixel 7 will also be offered in Lemon Grass, while the Pixel 7 Pro has ‘Hazel’ as its additional colour choice.

Software

Google will of course launch the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro with Android 13, which launched earlier this year, featuring improvements to their Material You theming, improved privacy controls, per-app language control and more. For the Pixel 7 series, you will receive up to 5 years of Security updates.

In terms of Pixel 7 exclusive features, Google has announced a few above in terms of the camera features like Photo Unblur, but there are more scheduled to arrive including Clear Calling and a VPN.

Google has announced that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will be the first to access the new VPN by Google One at no extra costs later this year. This new VPN will ensure your privacy and is normally only available on the Google One plan with a 2TB drive subscription, but will be coming free to Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro users when it launches.

Google has also listed ‘Clear Calling’ as a Pixel 7 feature, which will use the Tensor G2 processor to edit out any ambient noise, including wind or people in the background, to ensure you get high quality calls. This feature too appears to be ‘coming soon’, so expect it to show up in the coing months as part of Google’s monthly ‘Pixel Drops’.

Availability

Both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are available to pre-order from today with the devices on-sale from next week – deliveries are scheduled to begin from October 17-18 from the Google Store, with phones in-store from October 13th. 

Pricing, there’s a few options, with some storage options only available in one colour choice.
