Samsung partnering with Hyundai Motor Group connecting the smart home with connected cars

Samsung has today announced the expansion of their SmartThings platform to support connected cars, including EVs. This comes on the back of a memorandum signed by Samsung and Hyundai Motor Group to “develop solutions for future lifestyles that fully integrate the smart home and connected cars”

The partnership aims to develop  “Home-to-Car” and “Car-to-Home” services and an integrated home energy management service bringing the next-generation smart home to life. The collaboration will allow remote control of either system in both directions.

Using the SmartThings platform at home you will be able to start your car, control its smart air conditioning, open and close windows and check the charging status. On the other hand, from the car you will be able to control home appliances including TVs, air conditioners, and EV chargers.

“This collaboration will enable communication from Home-to-Car and integrated home energy management services that are optimized for future lifestyles,” said Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics. “By connecting the SmartThings platform with vehicles, we’ll be able to significantly enhance the customer experience in both the home and the car.”

With the new integration you will be able to include the actions of your Hyundai or Kia EV in a SmartThings routine such as a “good morning” or “arriving home” routine. No more getting in a cold car in the morning, your wake up routine can turn on the heating in your EV so its nice and toasty for your drive to work.

The integrated home energy management services will allow you to monitor not just the energy consumed by your connected devices but also the energy information of your EV and chargers. Using this you can set the charging time of the day for your EV to allow for different energy pricing throughout the daily cycle and more.
