German car giant Volkswagen has launched the world’s most advanced headlights – that go way beyond the capability of the most recent generation of Matrix headlights.
While Matrix headlights can mask oncoming cars – by switching individual beams on an off in milliseconds, in a ‘piano key’ effect as an oncoming vehicle approaches, so as to not dazzle the other driver – Volkswagen has taken the technology a giant leap further.

The new IQ headlights – with 19,216 pixels per headlight – are standard on all versions of the updated Volkswagen Touareg SUV due in Australian showrooms soon.
The new capabilities include:
- Dimming the specific area around reflective signs so they don’t dazzle you as a driver;
- Sending an isolated flash warning to pedestrians and cyclists on the edge of the road;
- Lighting up the adjacent lane when indicating to move to it;
- A work zone mode guides the safest path for the driver to follow in narrow situations;
- Three types of ‘welcome’ light display (ok that last one is more for fun rather than road safety).
