Gaming handhelds are becoming a more popular category, and ASUS have just taken the wraps off the updated ROG ALLY X, adding in more storage, faster RAM, longer battery life and more.
While the ROG Ally was a great introduction to gaming on the go, it had a few issues in terms of battery life, and of course performance. The new ROG Ally X addresses these complaints, adding in a larger 80Wh battery – doubling the original 40Wh in the original.
ASUS have also taken time to redesign the internal components on the new ROG Ally X, with improved thermal performance thanks to improved fans and heat distribution paths, and users will now be able to update the on-board SSD more easily with a new M.2 2280 slot on-board to house the upgraded 1TB SSD in the ROG Ally X.
There’s also now 24GB RAM on-board, up from 16GB in the original. The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU powering the handheld shares the memory between CPU and GPU, allowing for faster performance on AAA titles says ASUS.
These hardware updates haven’t added much weight to the ROG ALLY X, with the new handheld weighing only 70 grams more than its predecessor.

The new improved performance is also being mirrored on the outside, with a redesigned chassis that’s more comfortable to hold, updated buttons and joysticks that are more accurate, and a new Black colourway.
ASUS have also replaced the XG Mobile port with dual USB Type-C ports, with one offering Thunderbolt compatibility for using the ROG ALLY X with third-party docks and eGPUs. You can pre-order the ROG ALLY X for $1,599 AUD through the ASUS E-shop or JB Hi-Fi from today.
