Ready to flip the script, Motorola have unveiled their latest foldable phones overnight with the razr 50 and razr 50 ultra announced alongside a new Moto Tag tracker for Google’s Find My Device Network.

Razr 50

The new razr 50 and razr 50 Ultra will both be coming to Australia with the razr 50 Ultra launching here on July 17. Details on the razr 50 arrival in Australia haven’t been announced, we do know the specs.

Both phones though will include large external displays with the razr 50 ultra packing the largest external display of any flip phone on the market at four inches, with the razr 50 including a 3.6-inch display.

The phones will include Moto AI with support from Google’s cloud based Gemini AI model. The AI features will include things like Magic Compose in your Messages app for help with texts.

The external display will also include new AI-driven features that will offer ways to assist, interact, capture, and create – all without flipping the phone open. Motorola’s widget-like Panels have also been redesigned for improved functionality, including a new Spotify panel.

The flip phone opens to reveal a 6.9” POLED display with a refresh rate of up to 165Hz, and excellent colour reproduction with HDR10+ support and it’s super bright with a peak brightness up to 3000 nits.

The razr 50 Ultra  will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 mobile processor offering AI improvements, with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. The phone will offer ‘all-day’ battery life thanks to the 4000mAh battery that supports 45W TurboPower wired charging, 15W wireless charging (Not Qi2 boo) and 5W reverse charging – with a 68W charger included in the box.

The razr 50 will be powered by a Mediatek Dimensity 7300X with 8GB of RAM with a  4,200mAh battery with 30W wired and 15W wireless charging.

Motorola are leveraging their partnership with Bose to include immersive audio on the go with the razr 50 Ultra offering dual dynamic drivers and Hi-Res Audio.

The razr 50 Ultra comes with a new 50MP main camera sensor with a new 50MP telephoto sensor offering 2x Optical zoom, as well as a 32MP selfie camera for when you flip the phone open.

The razr 50 will also include a 50MP main sensor and 32MP selfie camera on the inside, though will opt for a 13MP ultra-wide sensor for the secondary rear camera.

The AI improvements extend to the camera with a photo enhancement engine, as well as adaptive stabilisation for steady shots while filming, increased shutter speeds for action shots, as well as artistic light  in photos, as well as super zoom for improving photos with digital zoom.

That flip motion is of course powered by a newly redesigned hinge, which is 30% smaller and is more reliable with better dust protection and stability, while also making the crease in the display even less noticeable.

The hinge enables Flex View letting you position the phone  camera to capture great shots and videos. Auto Camcorder mode lets you flip the phone half open like an old-school camcorder with a flip-out screen, and instantly starts recording. There’s also a photo booth mode that can shoot a quick set of four shots for a quick burst of fun.

The razr 50 ultra also now supports IPx8 water resistance, with the Gorilla Glass Victus adding additional drop and scratch protection on the external display.

HelloUX

The razr 50 series is powered by Android 14 with Motorola’s HelloUX which offers you more ways to personalise your phone, as well as an intuitive user interface and features such as Smart Connect, Moto Secure and Family Space.

The OS will include three years of updates, as well as four years of security updates.

The razr 50 series also introduces new AI features including Catch me up which can summarise your notifications, Pay attention to start recording meetings instantly, with a summary offered at the end, and Remember this which can capture live moments or on-screen information, and use AI to recall the details later.

The motorola razr 50 ultra will also include 3 months of premium Google One access including access to Google’s Gemini Advanced, which allows access to Google’s most capable AI models, including Gemini in their Docs, Gmail and more, as well as 2 TB of cloud storage.

The razr 50 Ultra will come in three colours – with matching protective cases included in the box. The colour choices include Midnight Blue and Spring Green, with Motorola leveraging their Pantone partnership to launch the razr 50 Ultra in the new Pantone Colour of the year for 2024, Peach Fuzz.

Moto Tag

Motorola have also jumped on-board Google’s Find My Device Network with the new Moto Tag.

The Moto Tag uses Bluetooth Low Energy, as well as Ultra Wide Band when paired with a supported phone, to track your belongings on the Find My Device Network. Google’s Find My Device Network will leverage a couple of billion Android devices out there to crowd-source location of any of your belongings you attach the tag to.

The Moto Tag will offer up to a year of battery life from the CR2032 battery powering it, with an IP67 rating ensuring you can tag it to just about anything.

There’s a multi-function button on the Moto Tag, offering you reverse find so you can find your phone by clicking the button, or even use the tag as a remote camera shutter button

Motorola have also advised that the slim profile has been ‘designed specifically to fit perfectly with most third-party accessories already on the market’ – so we’re thinking it will slot straight into your Air Tag holders and we’ll be checking this out ASAP.

Availability

At this stage Motorola Australia have confirmed the moto tag is coming, however haven’t announced local dates or pricing.

Internationally though, it looks like the moto tag will arrive in July, with US pricing expected to be $29.99USD, with a 4-pack set to be priced at $139.99USD – so we’ll have to see how local pricing pans out.
