Market leader Toyota continues to dominate hybrid cars sales in Australia, claiming the first six spots on the Top 10 sellers list so far this year.

The Japanese manufacturer still represents more than two out of every three hybrid cars sold locally so far this year, despite a wave of new competition.

As previously reported by EFTM, not all hybrids are created equally – and Toyota still has the most efficient system available, slashing fuel consumption by half.

Most rivals trim fuel use by between 20 and 40 per cent – or in some cases such as Mazda and Subaru, the fuel savings are negligible or non existent.

The Toyota RAV4 was the nation’s most popular hybrid vehicle from January through to the end of June 2024, according to official data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

Significantly, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid has also outsold the Tesla Model Y electric car in the year-to-date sales race by almost two-to-one (23,935 versus 12,516) as production of the RAV4 ramped up and the company was able to clear a backlog of orders.

And hybrid cars as a category continued to significantly outsell electric cars in Australia so far this year, according to the official scoreboards (81,613 vs 51,008).

Hybrid vehicles account for 12.9 per cent of all Australian new car sales year-to-date, whereas electric cars account for 8 per cent.

It’s also worth noting the rapid rise of Japanese brand Nissan and Chinese brand GWM Haval making an early showing inside the list of Top 10 selling hybrid cars.
