Google TV Streamer launches in the US to replace Chromecast

Ahead of their Pixel 9 announcement event next week, Google has announced their latest smart home devices today making the rumoured Google TV Streamer official.

The streaming device has been announced by Google and is now showing on the US Google Store in two colour options: Porcelain and Hazel. You can pre-order the Google TV Streamer only in the US (for now) for $99.99 USD with shipping starting near the end of September.
Update: Google Australia has confirmed the TV Streamer will be landing here later this year with more details to follow.

The Google TV Streamer is set to replace the Chromecast, according to the announcement, with Google saying the Chromecast  will ‘now only be available while supplies last’.

The hardware on the Google TV Streamer includes a bump in specs, as well as price, with the device sporting a faster CPU (faster by 22%), more storage (32GB) and double the RAM (4GB) of the Chromecast. It also includes a USB-C port for power and an ethernet jack for hardwiring to your network.

The Google TV Streamer supports 4K HDR @ 60fps and connects to your TV via HDMI 2.1 – though you need to supply your own compatible cable.

Google has packed a bunch of high-resolution Audio and Video support into the Google TV Streamer, with Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos support, as well as well as Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG. 802.11ac. You also get Bluetooth 5.1 and it supports Google Cast.

For smart home enthusiasts, the Google TV Streamer doubles as a smart home hub for your Google Home, with Matter support built-in and a Thread Border router included as well. The Google TV Streamer will also bring the Google Home panel, introduced on the Pixel Tablet, to the streaming device, offering you the ability to ‘check your cameras (see who’s there when your Nest Doorbell rings!), adjust the lights and temperature, close the blinds and more’.

AI will also be playing a part in the new Google TV Streamer experience, with Google’s Gemini on-board and able to curate content suggestions across all your streaming subscriptions, as well as building watchlists with recommendations for everyone in your household, and you can also get ‘full summaries, reviews and season-by-season breakdowns of content.

Google has also improved the remote for the Streamer, including an option for you to find the remote by saying ‘Hey Google, find my remote’ or pressing the button on the back of the Google TV Streamer.

At this stage, you can only find the Google TV Streamer on the US Google Store where it’s priced at .99 USD. It’s set to start shipping on September 24th, and we’ll be asking Google Australia about availability here.
