The release of Android 15 is one step closer, with Google pushing the code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) overnight.
While the release of a new version of Android is normally heralded by a release to the latest Pixel phones, Google has said there will be a delay, with Pixel’s due to receive the update in ‘coming weeks’.
Google has been publicly trialling Android 15 since February when they launched the Developer Preview, with a beta program still running and showing off the QPR1 release – which you can get in on if you have a compatible Pixel phone.
Android 15 will focus on a number of aspects, with privacy and security at the forefront, as well as bringing improvements to productivity, improved apps and media playback, as well as a more intuitive user experience – with Google stating they are targeting tablets and foldables.
On the privacy side, Google will introduce a new Private Space which will give you a place to store sensitive apps separately, hidden behind another layer of authentication. Google will also be bringing improvements to PassKeys, with an option to sign in with a single tap.
For Foldables and Tablets, Google says Android 15 will bring better support for displaying apps edge-to-edge, as well as new layouts including a taskbar you can pin to let you quickly switch between apps, as well as letting you save favourite split-screen app combinations.
Google has also introduced a series called Spotlight Weeks to dive into the new features which will offer tweaks to how Android displays and takes photos, as well as improvements to audio processing of MIDI and AAC.
I am a little low-key excited by the ability to control flash intensity in Android 15 in both Flash and Torch modes. No more blinding yourself at night.
While Google’s Pixel phones will receive the Android 15 update in the coming weeks, Google says we can expect Android 15 updates in the coming months from Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi – so stay tuned to their channels for info on your device.
For Pixel owners, you can check to see if ithe Android 15 update is available by going to Settings > System > Software Updates – but you should see the prompt to update as soon as it’s available.
