NBN aiming for mega speed boost – but it’s a year away in September 2025

I saw the announcement hit my inbox while I was sleeping here in Berlin and got very excited about the potential availability of faster high-speed NBN plans and even multi-gigabit speeds on NBN, but they’re not launching this September, it’s all coming in September 2025.

But hey, good things come to those who wait right?

The NBN Co has confirmed the changes to the download and upload speeds on the three highest speed residential home broadband plans with participating ISP’s from 14 September 2025.

This means if you’re on FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) or HFC (The old Foxtel/Bigpond cable) you’ll get access to some mega speed plans.

The very popular “Home Fast” plan goes from 100/20 speeds to a staggering 500/50. The “Home Superfast” goes from 250/25 to 750/50, and the “Home Ultradast” will go from between 500 and 1000 download and 50 upload to 1000 down and 100 up! Bring that on.

Of course, this long term date might help some customers decide to opt in for a faster speed now to order the Fibre upgrade if it’s available and be ready on the right tech by the time these new speeds drop.

Additionally, the long talked about “mutli-gigabit” speeds are coming too with a new 2 Gigabit per second plan coming in September 2025!

If you’re on FTTP you’ll be able to get 2000/200 and for those on the HFC network the speed will cap at 2000/100 so just a compromise on upload speed there.

It took six months of consultation and now we have a twelve month wait as consumers. Boooo..

Anna Perrin, Chief Customer Officer at the NBN said “Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the invaluable feedback we received from retailers throughout our very detailed consultation on accelerating our wholesale high-speed products.

“We are listening, and we thank retailers for the work they have undertaken to get us to this important announcement today – and the amount of time, effort and investment that will be required from retailers to bring these exciting, new, high-speed services to market.

“We have extended fibre and upgraded our Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) network capabilities in hundreds of communities across Australia. From September 2025, more than 9 million premises will be eligible to access the highest residential speed tiers from nbn.

“The multi-billion-dollar fibre upgrade program and launch of accelerated speed tiers are designed to lift Australia’s digital capabilities, unlocking social and economic opportunities across the nation.

“Australians are consuming more data than ever before and faster, higher-capacity broadband supports more high- and super-high-definition video streaming and video conferencing and smoother and lower-latency gaming, particularly when multiple devices are connected simultaneously.

“The network upgrades and accelerated wholesale speed tiers aim to make Australia ‘future-ready’ for the myriad applications that are on the horizon, including the anticipated rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).”

Critically, there’s no changes to the wholesale pricing of these plans, but we’re yet to see how the retail prices might be impacted given the additional data throughput and load on ISP networks, I wouldn’t expect them to just say the same.
