Amazon has unveiled their new range of Kindle e-readers, introducing four new models which include their first Colour Kindle which is due to launch next year.
The timing is great for new Kindles. With summer on the way Australians are expected to start reading over three billion pages on their Kindle devices this summer.
Patrick Walker, Amazon Devices Country Manager, Australia and New Zealand. Said “Customers love Kindle and are reading on their devices more than ever, with Aussie Kindle customers each reading on average an impressive 25,000 pages a year.
With summer just around the corner we know reading will be at all-time high, and our new Kindle lineup has something for everyone, no matter your reading style. We obsessed over every detail to deliver the best possible experience, and we know Aussies will be excited by new features such as 25% faster page turns on the Kindle Paperwhite, a more dynamic and intuitive writing experience on the Kindle Scribe, and fun new colours across the range.”
The new Kindle range includes the all-new Kindle Paperwhite, their fastest and thinnest Kindle ever, which is 24% faster according to Amazon, and includes a battery which can last up to 3 months.
The new Kindle Paperwhite also gets a slightly larger display, going up to 7” and has the highest contrast ratio of any Kindle to date giving text and images an additional ‘pop’ when viewed on the display.
You can get your hands on the new Kindle Paperwhite from today for $299 with 16GB of RAM in a black colourway, or with 32GB of RAM in a Metallic Jade or Metallic Black for $329.
If you’re not in the Kindle ecosystem, or just want to get into an e-reader, the all new entry level Kindle is probably just the ticket.
Weighing just 158 grams, the new entry-level Kindle is their smallest to date and comes with a 300ppi, glare-free display that’s faster and offers a brighter front light, and higher contrast ratio than previous models.
There’s weeks of life from a single charge on the large battery, and 16GB of on-board storage should keep you going for a while.
The entry-level Kindle is priced at $199, and comes in a choice of black or a fun and fresh new Matcha colour – and it’s on-sale now.
For those who enjoy annotating your ebooks, or simply note taking on a Kindle, Amazon has also updated, or ‘reimagined’ the Kindle Scribe – their stylus enabled Kindle which is now available to pre-order for $649, with deliveries starting December 5th.
The reimagined Kindle Scribe still includes a 10.2” display, but now has uniform borders and a smooth paper-like texture which has the effect of writing on paper with the ‘Premium Pen’ stylus.
The Premium Pen stylus also now includes a soft-tipped eraser, which Amazon says ‘feels like a pencil’ as you use it to brush the screen clean.
The new e-reader also has a new notetaking experience with Active Canvas, with notes being added directly into a book you’re reading. Amazon says that ‘Your note becomes part of the page and the book text dynamically flows around it—if you increase the font size, change the font style, or the book layout changes, the note remains visible exactly where you want it so you never lose any meaning or context’.
You can pre-order the reimagined Kindle Scribe today from $649 with 16GB of on-board storage, and it’s available in a choice of Tungsten or Metallic Jade colourways
Finally, Kindle is going Colour!
The new Kindle Colorsoft is Amazon’s first colour e-reader which is expected to arrive in 2025. No pricing has been announced at this stage, but it’s coming and I’m here for it!
The upcoming Kindle Colorsoft (that spelling!) will include a high contrast display with fast performance that can turn the page quickly and an auto-adjusting front-light and up to 8 weeks of battery life with Wireless Charging – it’s also waterproof, making it great to lay around by the pool – or take into a nice relaxing bath.
Amazon appears to have done a lot on the display for the Colorsoft, which they say has a new light-guide and nitride LEDs to increase brightness and colour reproduction with a rich, paper-like colour, which can be zoomed in without worrying about pixelating.
No pricing or dates have been announced except that it will be ‘coming in 2025 to Australian customers’.
