Sky Cards is the ultimate plane spotter game for Apple and Android phones!

Sometimes you get a press release or an early access invitation to a new game or app and that’s how we get into reviewing a new game. But this one has me addicted because my 13 year old Son who loves planes and plane spotting is into it.

Thanks to Harri’s mate Gab who found the game, Sky Cards is all about plane spotting, without leaving your home.

And yes, it’s addictive.

Open the app, and you are shown a circle around your actual location, within this circle are a bunch of planes – those are REAL FLIGHTS happening at this moment. How? Well, the game is built by the people who run FlightRadar24 – the biggest plane tracking site in the world.

Tap on any of the planes and your challenge is to “Catch” a photo of it. Now, you don’t actually need to duck outside and take a photo, this part is simulated. A graphic of the plane “flies” across your screen. The further the plane is from your actual location the harder it is to press the capture button when the plane is in the small square on screen.

But it’s not exactly complex.

For every type of plane you ‘catch’ you get a “card” for your collection.

The more of any plane, the higher ranked your card gets.

Some planes are of course more rare than others, so your collection is improved by looking out for the rarities.

Plus, there are some things you can collect within the game like the ability to “catch anywhere” so you can find any plane in the world and catch it, but as a one off.

For people who travel, this could be a load of fun, catching planes in random cities around the world.

What the game lacks is a “friendship” model, that might allow me to add my kids or mates as a group, so we can have a leaderboard.

There is a “Battle” component which is like Topps Trumps where you play a random person in challenges with a selected deck of your plane cards, to see who wins in categories like “longest wingspan” or “youngest plane”.

It’s a lot of fun, takes no time, and no cost.
