Telstra, in association with partners Champion Data and Field of Vision have announced that in an Australian first, they have developed technology to assist the blind or those with low vision enjoy live AFL games.
Marvel Stadium in Melbourne’s Docklands precinct will be the first venue equipped with Telstra Touch and Track technology developed in consultation with Vision Australia who state that there are over 450,000 people in Australia who are blind or have low vision.
The Telstra Touch and Track device issued free-of-charge to eligible spectators can assist vision impaired patrons by simulating ball and player movements in real time from physical movements through the use of responsive trackpad.

The device uses a magnet-driven steel ring that moves across a field to mirror the ball’s position in real time. This is possible by utilising 14 high-mounted cameras and real-time event data to pinpoint ball movement with centimetre-level accuracy. Distinct vibration patterns signal moments like goals, behinds, contact and marks allow fans to feel the rhythm and intensity of the game through their fingertips.

Shaun said “It’s like finally being able to follow the game, not just the noise. It’s honestly pretty incredible to see how far the Telstra Touch and Track has come. As someone with low vision, it’s powerful to see this kind of technology giving our community the chance to not just hear or imagine the game, but to feel it unfold as it happens. I’ve always loved footy, and having it become more accessible means that more fans like me can be part of the action in a way we never could before.”
Fans can pre-book devices at Marvel via their website or request a unit on the day. Guest Services at the stadium will even come and collect the device at the end of the game, saving you the trouble of returning it
