EV Sales Boom – record number of Electric Cars sold in March

Almost 16,000 Electric Vehicles were sold in Australia in March, a record number of EVs sold despite overall car sales declining year on year in the same month and while the Fuel Crisis spurred on by the War in Iran might appear to be the blame, it’s likely the net effect of those high petrol prices won’t kick in for another month or longer.

Not everyone has the means to just head down to the local car dealer and swap out their current internal combustion engined car and buy an EV, so while these numbers strongly indicate a trend against high fuel prices, it’s more likely these sales were established orders with the real rush still to come.

15,746 cars and SUVs were sold with fully electric powertrains, plus an additional 93 light commercial vehicles.

The Tesla Model Y was the best seller, with 2818 rolling out the door, with the BYD Sealion 7 in second at 1,970 sales and the popular Zeekr 7X is still seeing strong sales with 679 sold.

Cherry Omoda’s Jaecoo J5 EV was sold to 569 buyers, with the BYD Atto 2, Kia EV5, Geely EX5 and Tesla Model 3 all reporting more than 500 sales.

Australia’s cheapest EV the BYD Atto 1 was sold to 488 buyers.

BYD Continues to boom, with 7,217 total sales including their Plug In Hybrid Variants, up from 4,811 in the same month last year. That made the brand the Number 3 brand in Australia, well behind Toyota, but under 100 cars behind KIA.

That puts BYD ahead of Ford, Mazda, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Nissan and all those other established brands. It’s safe to say the car market has been turned on its head by these new brands and the electrification of the Australian Car Market.
