Smart Home security camera company Arlo has launched an updated set of subscription plans to enable new features at similar or lower prices for existing and new users.

The new plans – called Arlo Secure 5 but Sold simply as Arlo Secure BASIC and Arlo Secure PLUS are big leap forward in capabilities, without a big jump in price.

I know this because I pay $199 per year for what was Arlo Secure with Unlimited Cameras, and now with Arlo Secure Plus my cost will be $180 when I pay annually, $17.99 if I pay monthly.

Arlo Secure Basic is $7.99 per month ($80.04 if paid annually) for a single camera, or $12.99 per month ($129.96 annually) for unlimited cameras.

The “Basic” Plans are in essence access to 30 day cloud recordings, plus the ability to set smart activity zones.

You can also use “Filtered Detection” to reduce unwanted alerts with a grouping for People, Vehicles and Animals and only get a “motion” alert when one or more of those things are seen.

Plus plans get all the features, with the only downside on price likely to be for someone with a single camera as it’s a bigger price to pay, but seriously, if you’re going to the trouble of having these Arlo Secure features – get yourself more cameras!

Arlo Secure Plus allows for some far more intelligent notifications and detection features.

This includes, Person recognition. This is bigger than People, because you can label a person, and using facial recognition the system can then alert you WHO it sees

Similarly, there’s Vehicle detection, allowing you to label cars so you get notifications of who drove in the driveway, or perhaps more importantly, only get notifications when vehicles you don’t know drive up your driveway.

There’s also a new feature in Beta mode called “Custom Detection” – which allows you to train your Arlo system using snapshots from the camera that can alert you to things like the Garage door being open, the sprinkler being on and so on. That’s a Beta feature, but worth checking out.
