The unexpected, but very welcome addition of AirDrop support to the Pixel 10 series phones last year will expand to more Android devices this year according to Google.
The announcement was made by Eric Kay, VP Engineering for Android, while taking press on a tour through Google’s Taipei office. During the tour, according to the folks at Android Authority, Mr Kay said
“Last year, we launched AirDrop interoperability. In 2026, we’re going to be expanding it to a lot more devices.
We spent a lot of time and energy to make sure that we could build something that was compatible not only with iPhone but iPads and MacBooks. Now that we’ve proven it out, we’re working with our partners to expand it into the rest of the ecosystem, and you should see some exciting announcements coming very soon,”
The exact date of ‘coming very soon’ is up in the air, with the obvious choice being Google I/O in May, though it’s a little far away. Google has been launching features with Samsung, who are expected to have a Galaxy Unpacked event soon for the Galaxy S26 series, or we could just see an Android feature drop in Google Play Services in the near future.
Better interoperability is always good, and this works a treat between Android and Apple users, so we can’t wait to see this one launching.
