A lot of people think of Amazon as huge warehouses with robots doing all the work, but in truth, there are huge numbers of people working across the business at the fulfilment centres, and all the way along the supply chain. Today, Amazon re-launched their “Career Choice” program in Australia to up-skill workers keen for a different role.

There are over 8,000 people employed by Amazon in Australia and that’s likely to be a growing number over the years ahead.

Having invested over $35 billion in Australia since 2011 Amazon isn’t going anywhere soon, so growth will need skilled workers and rather than making that an internal only program, the Career Choice program is about educating employees to learn new skills to be used at Amazon or elsewhere.

The skills range from Truck Drivers getting their heavy vehicle licence through to software development and data centre engineers.

It’s not an at work up-skilling, you do the coursework in your own time, but Amazon is footing the bill for the skill and certification.

Across Australia some of the skills being identified for the program include:

Health Services

  • Safety Specialist — This program offers a Certificate in Work Health and Safety (WHS). It helps employees build skills to manage WHS in any workplace.
  • Regulated Waste Coordinator— This program empowers employees in building future-ready capabilities that contribute to more sustainable workplaces and communities.

Technology

  • Software Developer Employees learn in-demand software development skills. No technical background is needed.

Mechanical/Industrial Systems

  • Telecommunications Cabling and Wiring Technician This course prepares employees for roles in installing, maintaining, and supporting modern telecommunications networks. It is one of Australia’s most in-demand technical qualifications.
  • Data Center Engineering Technician— This course prepares employees to work with NBN, fibre optic, and structured data networks, creating pathways into NBN rollout, 5G, and data center roles.

Transportation (Existing Offering)

  • Truck Driver – Designed to help employees earn their Heavy Vehicle License, this course provides a pathway into a career in truck driving.
