It’s no secret that I’m not a massive fan of SUVs. I just don’t really get them. I mean, I’m all across four wheel drives – owned heaps of them. I just don’t get these two wheel drive SUVs. Why not just buy a wagon? It is this question that has shaped this ‘Flipsy’s Flips’.
1964 Holden EH Special – $29000 – 94,000 km

This is how families used to get around. The seller reckons this old girl is neat as a pin. On the plus side, you will never need to worry about depreciation ever again. On the downside, if you crash you’re brown bread…. and I’ve gotten really used to air conditioning.
2017 Skoda Octavia RS 230 – $30000 – 42,000 km

Keeping it in the Volkswagen Audi Group, this thing is legendary. More kit than the Tiguan, more fun than the Tiguan, more power, more speed, more street appeal, more space… you get the idea.
The manual version of this car is rare too, so this one might keep the depreciation devil at bay too. Buy it. NOW!

2015 Mercedes-Benz C250 – $39900 – 27,000km

I’ve owned thirteen or fourteen VeeDubs – I really like them, so maybe I’m a bit biased, so let’s leave Wolfsburg (well, Germany altogether in the case of the Tiguan – it’s built in the Czech Republic) and head over to Stuttgart.
This little Merc is like new and is better than the Tiguan in every measurable way. With under 30k km on the clock it has tonnes of life left in it. Expensive servicing, in my experience, is also a myth.
My brother’s own C Class is about half the cost to service each year at the dealer than his Subaru Outback. You can’t really go wrong.
