If you’ve been holding off from queuing up outside an Apple store while you wonder exactly how good the iPhone 4S’ 1080p video recording is, this video compares the new iPhone’s footage with a Canon 5D Mk II. It may well get you excited enough for the Apple Store line ride.
The video, from Vimeo user Robino Films, uses a custom rig to shoot identical footage using both devices. Settings are matched as best as possible, so the comparison is fairly tight.

– AE.AF locked. That’s all you have!
Canon 5D MKII
– Canon 50mm 1.4
– ISO 160 ~ 640 (varied per shot to match the iPhone)
– F 7~22 (varied per shot to match the iPhone)
– Shutter 1/60th

– Standard Picture Style
– 1080p 30
What’s amazing is that the iPhone 4S has almost as much detail in the final result, despite being a fraction of the size of the Canon. Not only that, but the colour seems a little richer, although the depth of field clarity is blown away by the DSLR.
It’s worth watching full screen in HD to get the full effect. But still, for a smartphone, the quality is amazing. Expect to see a lot more high quality YouTube videos in the coming months…
