Last year we were invited to a dinner with St Hugo where we sampled a range of lovely wines with our meals. There was one wine however that was quite moving. It wasn’t because of the flavour, though it did taste good, it was because of the story behind the wine. The St Hugo Legacy Collection started that year with the Last Letter. It was a 2013 Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon and it was a tribute to the last message sent from Hugo Gramp to his son Colin. That final message was received by Colin the day he also discovered his father Hugo, had passed away in a plane accident.
This week we were privileged to have a seat at the table for the next installment of the Legacy Collection, it is the 2014 Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon and has been named the Unspoken Promise. The background behind the name this year is that at the funeral of Hugo Gramp, a gentleman named Rudi Buring approached Colin to look after him and guide him through picking up where Hugo left off and keeping the business afloat.
Colin, who is now 97 years old and still very involved in the business, remembers the day he met Rudi when he “introduced himself to me and said, ‘Colin, I’m here to look after you’, and he certainly did. I felt I got on so well with him because he reminded me of Dad”.
And how does it taste? Well, side by side with the Last Letter I personally enjoyed the Unspoken Promise a little more, it has elegant dark fruit flavours, some oak expressions and hints of dark chocolate. It’s a complex wine that requires a few sips and some time to let the flavours sink in and really be savoured.
Dan Swincer, the Chief Winemaker at St Hugo believe this wine has the ability to be cellared up until 2030, if you can wait that long.
While we were there we did try a large range of wines from St Hugo beyond this example. For lovers of Cabernet Sauvignon who are slightly more cost conscious you’ll find a lovely example in the 2015 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, arguably one of the best regions in the world for Cabernet Sauvignon. It scored 95 points in the 2019 Halliday Wine Companion and retails for $57.99.
For those looking for that special occasion though or a lovely gift perhaps between father and son, the St Hugo Legacy Collection – Unspoken Promise, is available now for $74.99.
